Look… I pride myself on knowing my pop culture, my cinema, and my music history. But today? Today I got humbled.

I was today years old when I finally discovered Michael Jackson’s 1986 sci-fi short film Captain EO.

And let me tell you, my mind is completely blown.

Captain EO was basically Thriller-before-Thriller (in terms of cinematic scale), Janet Jackson-before-Janet Jackson (that sleek, futuristic, mechanical choreography she mastered in Rhythm Nation later on), and directed by Nic Cage's uncle, the wine extraordinaire, Francis Ford Coppola with Mr. Star Wars-himself, George Lucas producing. $23 million budget in 1986 for a 17-minute Disney 3D movie! Absolute madness.

But the moment that made me jump out of my chair wasn't even the sci-fi lasers or the alien creatures. It was the music at the end—specifically when "Another Part of Me" hits and MJ starts moving.

For over twenty years, I watched Rush Hour thinking Chris Tucker was just being a hilarious, goofy Michael Jackson fan doing a random dance riff in the middle of his intro scene. I thought, “Classic Chris, just doing his MJ impersonation.”

NOPE.

That entire vibe? The track, the high energy, the exact cadence of the performance? It was a direct reference to Captain EO! Chris wasn’t just doing a general Michael Jackson impression—he was channeling Captain EO line-for-line, step-for-step!

How did I miss this for decades?!

It completely changes how you watch Rush Hour. It wasn't just comedy; it was a deeply ingrained, low-key brilliant homage to a piece of MJ history that lived almost exclusively in Disney theme parks back in the day.

MJ was really out here playing an intergalactic space captain saving the universe with the power of funk and synth-pop, laying down the blueprint for everything 90s pop-culture would become, and Chris Tucker knew the lore cold.
