Billy Ray Valentine (real name: Mark Anthony Mathews) is a powerhouse of creativity—a filmmaker, writer, and music producer who has masterfully crafted stories and soundtracks that resonate with authenticity and grit. Growing up in Chicago’s Robert Taylor Homes and Englewood neighborhood, Billy Ray’s upbringing in some of the city’s most challenging environments became the foundation for his compelling storytelling.

Billy Ray’s career began in the music industry, where his knack for lyrical storytelling quickly set him apart. His early successes included a two-year deal with Warner Brothers Records, chart-topping singles like Virgin Man and Leaving Me, and collaborations with icons such as Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Queen Latifah. His production work on the Cha Cha Slide album earned both U.S. gold and U.K. platinum status, cementing his reputation as a force in music production.

While excelling in music, Billy Ray never lost sight of his dream of filmmaking. Inspired by the 1970s crime drama Black Caesar, he envisioned telling stories that showcased the raw realities and resilience of his community. With no formal training, Billy Ray taught himself to shoot, edit, and produce films, launching Singles Film & Music Entertainment (SFME) in 2009.

His first feature, Magic, drew heavily from his own experiences, chronicling the story of a young man escaping the cycle of gang violence through music. The film’s success paved the way for more projects, including Lil Ceasar, The Walk of Rufus, and Roseland. These films not only tell gripping stories but also give audiences a deeply personal look into life on Chicago’s South Side.

Billy Ray’s ability to wear multiple hats—writer, director, cinematographer, and producer—has allowed him to bring his creative visions to life with unparalleled authenticity. “Before I start a film, the movie is already finished in my mind,” he says, describing his meticulous process of visualizing the final product.

His ability to juggle multiple roles has not only streamlined production but also created a signature style that reflects his uncompromising dedication to storytelling.

Billy Ray’s path hasn’t been without obstacles. From financial constraints to gatekeeping in the industry, his journey has been marked by challenges that tested his resolve. “I literally had a panic attack while making my first film,” he recalls. But with determination, resourcefulness, and a passion for storytelling, he overcame these hurdles to build a thriving career in independent filmmaking.

Billy Ray’s work continues to grow, with his upcoming film The Legend of Doc Mays set for release in January 2025. Always looking to expand his horizons, he’s excited about delving into genres like science fiction and monster films. “I want to be remembered as one of the greatest envelope pushers in filmmaking,” he says, a testament to his ambitious vision.

Billy Ray’s advice for emerging filmmakers is simple yet profound: “Believe in yourself and your dream. Build your map and follow it—no matter what, don’t stop.” His journey is proof that with resilience and passion, it’s possible to overcome any obstacle and create work that leaves a lasting impact.
